Gum (Periodontal) Disease

When the gums around teeth become infected it is called periodontal disease. This is one of the top reasons for tooth loss in adults. Sadly, this is a painless disease and many people don’t even know they have it. The dentist will check for gum disease at each check up by measuring the amount of space between the teeth and gums.

What Causes Gum Disease?

Plaque is a sticky form of bacteria that forms on teeth. If it is not removed, it will continue to build up and create toxins. These toxins will damage the gums. Plaque is removed by regular brushing, flossing and during dental exams. Periodontal disease forms just below the gum line by forming small pockets that separate the gums from the teeth.

Periodontal disease is classified into two types: gingivitis and periodontitis.

5

Gingivitis

The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis.  The gums are red, swollen and bleed easily.  This can be averted with daily brushing and flossing.

5

Periodontitis

The second phase of gum disease is periodontitis, which is a result of untreated gingivitis. This will eventually result in tooth loss.

Lifestyle Related Couses

There are lifestyle choices and conditions that can increase the risk of periodontal disease:

such as steroids, anti-epilepsy drugs, cancer therapy drugs, calcium channel blockers, and oral contraceptives
