Wisdom teeth develop in early to late teenage years and are found in the far back of the mouth. These are the last teeth to erupt. Unfortunately in most mouths, there is insufficient room to accommodate these molars. The result is that either the teeth do not emerge, or they come in at odd angles.
Why Should I Remove My Wisdom Teeth?
If these teeth do not properly come through, they create space for food where plaque can be trapped and is unable to be removed. This will result in infections and cavities in the surrounding teeth. If they do not fully emerge, the other teeth will become overcrowded causing them to become crooked.
If orthodontics are recommended, the dentist will probably recommend removal of the wisdom teeth prior to the braces to prevent a recurrence of crowding after the braces are removed.
Another situation that can develop is that dental cysts or tumors can develop in that area causing damage to the surrounding teeth or bone.
Removal of wisdom teeth, especially if impacted, is recommended for younger teenagers. At that point in development the surgery is simpler and there are fewer postoperative complications and risks.
Surgical Removal of Wisdom Teeth
